Pont Valentre, Cahors

Impressive 14th century bridge built with a little help from the devil

featured in Sights & sites

Built in the 14th century, the Valentré bridge is synonymous with the town of Cahors.

It stands imposingly across the river Lot with its six arches and three towers, which once had huge gates and portcullises. It was renovated in the late 19th century by Paul Gout, who also added the small carved devil on the central tower.

Legend has it that the original architect made a deal with the devil to speed its construction but decided to try and back out of it at the last minute so the devil removed the last brick over and over and over again delaying the bridge's completion!
