Truffle market, Martel
Great truffle market hosted by the capital of truffles
Huge and well known truffle market on Saturdays in Martel
From mid-December though until the first week of February, the weekly market on a Saturday in Martel is supplemented by a huge truffle market selling the regional specialities following harvest.
However, the big festival takes place annually in January with all local growers coming together in Martel to celebrate and sell their splendid truffles.
History
Truffle production in Martel was so significant that the first freight train was named the 'Truffadou'. Now a tourist steam train, it originally took truffles from the station of Saint-Denis-près-Martel and transported them to Paris.
In 1913, no less than 10 tons of truffle were sold there. Crops are now smaller with 29kg being sold in 2016, which is a lot by today's standards.
